Toronto’s Billy Bishop airport ranked among the best in the world. Passengers say it’s been overlooked for years

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport just got major bragging rights after ranking as one of the best regional airports in North America and in the world.

That’s right, the tiny airport on Lake Ontario is steadily making noise all the while catching the attention of passengers.

Billy Bishop came eighth in the world’s best airports category, with under five million passengers, according to Skytrax, an international air transit rating organization

The airport also ranked in ninth place among the best airports in North America behind many other airports in the U.S. and Calgary, the one other Canadian city that cracked the top 10 list at fifth place.

This ranking is a grim contrast to Toronto Pearson Airport that ranked as the worst airport in the world last year.

FlightAware, a flight tracking service, revealed that Toronto’s Pearson airport had the most flight delays globally throughout summer 2022.

There were reportedly 7,000 angry travellers who called out the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) with complaints related to flight disruptions.

With Pearson down on its luck, Billy Bishop is swooping in and making waves all over social media with online users saying it’s the better way to fly nowadays.

With the island airport making its way into the big leagues, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre said if given the power he would allow bigger planes like jets to fly in and out of the airport, an expansion that was blocked by the federal government back in 2015.

Poilievre said the move would increase competition in the aviation sector and give passengers another option besides Pearson.

“Travel at Pearson is a mess right now,” he said in a media statement last summer.

“There could have been way more flights out of Billy Bishop airport in downtown Toronto, meaning more competition and more choice, but the dreadful gatekeepers wouldn’t let it happen.”

If ever approved, this move could no doubt upset waterfront condo owners worried about noise in the area.
