Tower lockout

Rating: NNNNN

after being locked out and onthe picket line for more than three months, maintenance workers at BCE Place are appealing a recent Ontario Labour Relations Board decision that found that the employer did not act illegally when it shut them out.The Canadian Union of Operating Engineers and General Workers complained to the board that 53 workers had been illegally locked out in August after Brookfield Management Services withdrew its contract offer.

Since the first contract was bargained three years ago, Brookfield, which owns and operates the downtown office towers, has been attempting to contract out union jobs. “It’s an issue of do we get to retain our jobs,” says the union’s Zoran Grgor.

Brookfield spokesperson Sherri High would only say that the company’s priority is making sure the buildings are serviced.SA
