Friday’s Trans* March at Pride Week

Thousands took part in the annual Trans* March Friday evening — an event whose numbers seem to swell by 50 per cent each year, a literal manifestation of the march of progress. Only the third time the procession has been officially permitted to proceed down Yonge, and the first it’s been allowed to take over the whole street, the Trans* March has quickly established itself as one of Pride Week’s largest and most urgent events.

“The United States of America just legalized same-sex marriage!” someone declared through a megaphone. The crowd cheered.

“But the majority of states still have no protections for gender identity!” the person added. The crowd booed.

Less a parade than a political protest, the chant “Trans rights now!” was ubiquitous. While Ontario may offer explicit human rights protections for trans people, the bill that would do so at the federal level got held up and then effectively destroyed by a single (unelected) senator from Manitoba.

Against a cotton-candy sky, Torontonians came out to call bullshit on this and show solidarity with those fighting for equal rights and dignity. It was our city at its best.

As one participant stated loudly and plainly: “Everyone remember that we march so that the next generation of kids don’t have the fucked-up lives that we had.”
