Trustee Tests

Rating: NNNNN

the big news out of the recenttrustee election was the addition of five parent activists to the 22-member Toronto District School Board. They join three other progressives, a shift to the left although the balance is still held by moderates. One of the board’s first tests will be the selection of a new chair on December 6. NDPer Irene Atkinson, who has the best shot, is being challenged by conservative Donna Cansfield. It looks like the moderates will give Atkinson the chair, but they’ll go for balance by making Cansfield vice-chair.

The big question is, will the board decide to fund its programs based on what’s called a “needs-based budget,” meaning a possible deficit budget?

This is now illegal, of course, under Bill 74, but some think it’s worth having the Harris Tories put the board under trusteeship, fire the trustees and fine them up to $5,000. Would the Tories, already falling in the polls have the nerve to face down the board? We’ll see soon enough.
