education lefties are watching warily as a fateful Toronto District School Board by-election looms. The Etobicoke North seat vacated by Sam Basra, convicted of using his position to promise false jobs, could provide the key to a progressive hold on the board -- or to the triumph of right-wing control.
At this point, with the seat vacant, there are 11 right-wingers and 10 progressives, all in all a little too close for comfort, especially since the board must decide this spring whether to pass a budget based on Tory cutbacks or one based on needs, dubbed the "Needs To Succeed Budget.'
Rumour has it that conservative chair Donna Cansfield has lined up former Etobicoke mayor Bruce Sinclair as the Tory champion. Sinclair, a Red Tory type, confirms for NOW that he will run, pointing to his strengths as a former teacher and trustee. Still, his association with Cansfield indicates that she expects him to tip right.
On the left side of the equation, retired McGill professor Stan Nemiroff, who came in second last time, tells NOW he's "willing' to run but is awaiting the decision of a coalition of unionists and activists.
