Twig’s new tape

Toronto “Concrete / Rockabilly” artist Slim Twig has often said that hip-hop is more of an influence on him than the Cramps.

That’s not always evident when you first hear his dissonant swamp rock dirges, but closer analysis of his creative use of sampling and his knack for spinning engrossing dark bloody narratives reveals the distant connections between his off-kilter tunes and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Those influences are much more evident in his newest offering Spit It Twig! Vol. 2, his second free mixtape modelled on the format that helped build the careers of folks like Lil’ Wayne, Drake and the Clipse. This time around he’s indulging in more collaboration, with contributions from Dirty Beaches, Onakabazien, and D-Sisive. The results are at times funkier than we’d expect from Twig, although it also contains tons of that unhinged abstraction that’s brought him so much acclaim over the past couple years.

The release of his newest mixtape coincides with a North American tour, and for those that missed Vol. 1, it’s also available as a free download.[rssbreak]
