“Frankly, I think it’s not a day for a discussion of policies. ”
The PM, in the crosshairs of last week’s Dawson College shooting rampage, callously sloughs off any talk of abandoning plans to scrap the gun registry.

We hope those American-loving Tories weren’t selling us down the Mississippi at that conference on North American integration in Banff September 12 to 14. Attendees including the devil himself, Donald Rumsfeld, other high-ranking U.S. officials, Defence Minister Gordon O’Connor and Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day discussed topics like A North American Energy Strategy and Opportunities For Security Cooperation. After Afghanistan and the softwood lumber fiasco, we’re horrified to think what madness these freaks cooked up. We’ll remain in denial for the moment.
Star columnist Royson James has decided to make himself the official opposition since the conventional wisdom is that Jane Pitfield doesn’t stand a chance against David Miller in this fall’s mayoral race. Not one for the vision thang, James styles himself the Everyman who speaks for that rarest of species, the “average Torontonian,” whose main concerns are that garbage gets picked up and those pesky homeless are swept off the streets like so much litter. In James’s world, the largest, most cosmopolitan city in the country shouldn’t be spending time and money aspiring to greatness. Mediocrity represented by the likes of Pitfield will do.
Luckily for the voters of Parkdale-High Park, Sylvia Watson won’t be seeking re-election as councillor. Watson was keeping her options open, having taken a leave of absence to run unsuccessfully in last week’s provincial by-election. Seems she has the smarts to know when she’s not wanted after the embarrassing ass-whuppin’ she took.
As encouraged as we are to see the usually mealy-mouthed Globe, et al., call for the resignation of RCMP boss Giuliano “Don’t Call Me Julie” Zaccardelli for the Maher Arar debacle, it doesn’t go far enough. What about the coppers whose misinformation sent Arar to a Syrian jail to be tortured? Those in the government who hid behind diplomatic niceties despite physical signs Arar was being beaten? The mofos who leaked false info when he was finally released that made it impossible for Arar to find gainful employment? Yes, a complete housecleaning is in order.
