Bull market goes to pasture
Who didn’t see the bloodletting on Bay Street coming? Well, Harp’s Tories. How stupid does the billions lost on marking the GST down by a useless 1 per cent so we can all sip a Tim’s coffee for few cents less look now? Or, for that matter, the billions in surplus wasted on corporate tax cuts. Those workers in our beleaguered manufacturing sector desperate for help? All the Tories can spare is a paltry $1 billion now that the kitty has been emptied. We’re on the precipice of an economic recession without a parachute.
Fishy LCBO story
Those enviro bags the LCBO is flogging to push its green cred? Turns out some of the proceeds are being used to stock Greenbelt streams with non-native Atlantic salmon – a project that Peaceful Parks Coalition says will further damage the battered ecology of the Great Lakes. The real hook, line and stinker here is that the LCBO is pushing the project in the name of green, when it’s all for sport – the program’s being run in partnership with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. Need an enviro bag? Buy one from an eco group that can really use the money.
Rocket’s red glare
Driving a bus in this town can be more stressful than being a cop. TTC operators filed 181 claims for post-traumatic stress in the last year. But they aren’t the only ones stressed. Crimes against paying customers on the TTC have increased 25 per cent (1,601 attacks in 2006, compared to a five-year average of 1,194 per year). Hard to believe TTC higher-ups when they tell us the system’s safe. Must be why they’re hiring more special constables and installing all those new security cameras. Scary.
Another sorry spin from the Tory PR machine. This time they’re trying to make Grit nemesis Stéphane Dion wear Green party head Elizabeth May’s “Christian/Crusader” misfire over the Manley report on Afghanistan Tuesday. A Tory release calls on the Grit leader to “terminate his electoral cooperation agreement” with the “radical” May. There are a few million Afghans who wouldn’t find May’s statement so radical.
