There's nothing that says there's any pro-police bias.
Crowned on King
The King Parliament Square redevelopment is one of two winners of this year's Heritage Toronto Award of Excellence. The two buildings, erected for the Aluminum Crown & Stopper Company in 1897 and 1911, housed a munitions factory in the 1930s.
Best news of all - this architectural beauty has been converted to job-making commercial uses, saving what's left of our historic commercial buildings.
Kyoto's dead, officially. Last week a federal court promptly killed a lawsuit launched by Friends of the Earth and Ecojustice against the feds for breaking its commitments to cut greenhouse gas emissions. The court disappointingly washed its hands, ruling that it had no jurisdiction. "A stake in the heart of democracy," says Friends' Beatrice Olivastri. Yup, smells a little to us, too.
Frank no more
Er, that's it. After a wild 19-year ride excoriating the champagne set - the Mulroney flayings being the most memorable - Frank Magazine and eFrank.ca are kaput, this time for good. Publisher Michael Bate sent a typically frank e-mail to subscribers Tuesday morning with the news. Apparently, a triumphant comeback has been ruled out. Despite the paper's best efforts and patient investors, profitability could not be achieved. Bate says, "It is now time to move on." That's all, folks.
Shine off crazy diamond
Among the precious stones in the ROM's Nature Of Diamonds exhibit, the Incomparable Diamond, a 407-karat number, stands out. Unlike the other rocks, the Incomparable originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), where it was found by a young girl outside her uncle's home, according to the official story, in rubble dumped from a nearby mine. That was in the early 80s, during a 40-year civil war in which rebel and government forces routinely stole diamonds to buy weapons. Won't read that in the ROM promo material, though.
