Nasty’s the norm
The nastiest election campaign ever? After Lib supporters had their homes spray-painted and their cars’ brake cables cut, there’s no doubt we’ve descended into the abyss when it comes to what passes for political discourse in this country. Blame the Tories. Blame the antics on all sides in the House. Blame the pollsters who keep telling the spinmeisters in Tory backrooms that the public doesn’t give a shit – the dirtier the better. It’s worked so far for the Tories. The economy’s bleeding big time, but as of Tuesday the Tories still held a five-point lead. The dangerous part for Anybody But Conservative forces: the battleground has now moved to Ontario from Quebec. And 905ers just aren’t as freaked about voting Tory, as scary as they may be to the rest of us.
Lib Star pumping Tories?
After Saturday’s front-page blow job for the Tories – the questionable Angus Reid poll showing the Tories at 40 per cent, coupled with an “analysis” of why Canada may dodge the U.S. economic slide – it’s weird to think, but is the Liberal Star setting us up for an endorsement of Harper? Jack maybe? It’s worth noting that the small-c conservative Globe, under the banner headline “The Gloom Spreads North,” put the prospect of a recession front and centre on its cover Saturday. But judging by the six-page puff piece on Harper inside – yes, he’s a stiff, but he’s a decent guy – it’s unlikely the Globe will back anybody but the Tories. How much longer can opinion-makers in this country ignore the mess the Tories have made of the economy by blowing off the manufacturing heartland for the oil patch?
Ban on the run
A 200-square-foot canvas pumping the mayor’s call for a handgun ban was mysteriously taken down from the Millwood Bridge overlooking the southbound lanes of the DVP Monday, October 6, less than an hour after it was put up. The culprit or culprits would have needed bolt cutters – the sign was affixed to the bridge with chains – and a truck to lug it away. Art for peace becomes the target rather than society’s deadly fascination with this weapon of mass destruction.
Atwood’s off-red
Annex residents may be caught a little off guard by the off-red sign for Liberal challenger Christine Innes on, of all places, Margaret Atwood’s front drive. Peg’s bucking for Innes over much-loved incumbent Olivia Chow? It must just be Atwood expressing that wonderful sense of irony. There’s a Green party sign right next to the Libs’. And Atwood has also been tossing around many ABC (Anyone But Conservative) endorsements, signed with a photo. The Bloc? Sure. Greens? Hey, Marxist-Leninists, grab one, too!
