dog day afternoon
Jumping poodles mingled with prancing bikinis at this year's family-filled CHIN picnic, much to the displeasure of animal rights supporters. Decked in full Disney lion gear, the uncaged poodles hopped from perch to perch to the crack of the ringmaster's whip. Concerned bystanders charged that the dolled-up dogs were wilting in the heat and resembled a circus of cruelty when one dog slipped from its stand. Funny, the same act at the Pride parade, only with humans, probably would have got rave reviews.
now it can be told So former TTC chief and Mayor Mel's efficiency expert David Gunn, who has gone to Washington to revive Amtrak, now charges that Toronto's labour woes stem from council's inability to manage city affairs. Who knew? He also suggests giving the mayor more executive powers. Yikes. Now we know why Mel liked him so much.
A case of misguided priorities? A couple of weeks ago city councillor Chris Korwin-Kuczynski wrote TTC chief general manager Richard Ducharme complaining about the "blowing garbage on the subway platforms" and TTC "garbage cans overflowing and jammed with garbage."
Thanks for that, KK. But what's with sending 10 copies of the letter to us over a week? Check the resend button on your fax machine, pal.
Who killed the garden at U of T? The student administrative council at U of T just wanted to help the hungry by growing some herbs and veggies. Last week, however, after getting formal permission from administration for the spread, somebody covered the plants with a mysterious white powder, drying them out and contaminating the soil. The powder is being tested. But beware, the veggie killers are still at large.
police spin of the week
So the police claim the drop in homicides so far this year to a dozen from 22 this time last year is mostly due to their new gun squad, which is supposedly getting guns off the streets. Hard to tell whether this is true or just a nice summer PR play. The cops were curiously tight-lipped when NOW made inquiries a few weeks back about those very same guns stats. Could it be that all the gun-related charges they've been laying have nothing to do with foul play at all? For all we know, folks are being busted on their way to the shooting range.
