How many peace marchers does it take to stop a war? Nobody knows, based on the crazy counts from this weekend's mega-march. The cops claim they weren't counting, but that doesn't add up. Us? We think it was about 50,00o, but then we were never good at math. Great launch for Dundas Square.
Take your legacy and shove it
Hey, Jean, thanks for nuthin'. Chretien's goody-bag budget was empty for cities. So the PM's legacy for urban areas will include failing water systems, collapsing transit and crumbling roads. And to Dennis Mills, Tom Wappel, Tony Ianno and the rest of impotent Toronto-area federal Liberals -- who needs you? We could have got nothing from the feds on our own.
Duguid closed-door dodge
Councillor Brad Duguid should find the stink from Toronto's scandal-encrusted City Hall more offensive than rotten PR the city's bagging for dumping near Detroit. But Duguid took Toronto's greasy style on the road trying to hold private meetings with mayors along the trash turnpike between T.O. and Michigan. His PR flop went straight to the dumpster when Sarnia's mayor refused to go behind closed doors. Duguid left in a huff, leaving only a city-slicker stink.
Rosie's racial profiling
Keep your Camembert and hold the peace signs for the Toronto Star's increasingly hysterical, pro-war loony, Rosie DiManno. In a grindingly ignorant column, DiManno declares peace marchers have "phlegm in their veins." And those Frenchies? "The French know all about saving their skins. They've turtled and collaborated often enough. Going to war without the French is like going hunting without an accordion." You'd think an Italian-Canadian kid would think twice about national typecasting, having grown up with taunts aimed at her ancestors and their backbone.
Tory Tory Tory
News-lite radio 680 has fallen hard for mock-Mel John Tory. Tuesday, Tory was all over the station as it hyped a charity breakfast speech by the Great Right Hope . In promos for 680's federal budget coverage, listeners were promised -- surprise! -- Tory's reaction to Chretien's hammering of cities. Tory was the only mayoralty candidate they were pushing and, oh yeah, he happens to be CEO of Rogers, owner of 680 News. Can we expect Tory to be tossing out the first pitch at the Blue Jays home opener, analyzing hockey games on The Fan or hyping skin-care products on The Shopping Channel, all Rogers properties? Equal time, anyone?
