"As a Floridian travelling overseas, I'm travelling to Canada, so I hope people would appreciate that as well."
- Florida governor and election-rigger Jeb Bush shows he shares his big bubba's, er, brother's keen sense of geography during his visit to T.O.
Island airport crash count
Monday's tragic plane crash near Toronto Island Airport is another sobering reason to oppose a dramatic increase in waterfront air traffic. The crash was the sixth in 15 years at the money-losing airfield. The same day, a commercial flight from Ottawa had to turn back after two failed landing attempts, and the air strip was closed days earlier because smog and fog made condo-corridor flights unsafe. Let's use mega-sized Pearson airport and leave the lake to residents, businesses and visitors.
Begging for an education
It's so painfully pre-democratic to watch worried parents and desperate school kids beg for services from unelected Ernie Eves axeman Paul Christie. We used to have elected school trustees with real power, and a great school system. Now, no votes, and for many, no hope for an education. Time to end the insult of Ernie Eves's rule.
Thanks a lot, suckers
Now a new reason to love BC besides great scenery, great bud and Ross Rebagliati. Those West Coast suckers just took a multi-million-pound Olympic monkey off Toronto's back. While we can't count on politicians to resist the chest-swelling lure of legacy-building mega-projects, there's no way the Games will be coming to another Canadian city for decades. So let's see some Olympic-sized dreaming for a real people's waterfront, without cavernous stadiums and giant windblown parking lots.

Global Anti-globalization star Naomi Klein explains a conspiracy theory we're buying to a puzzled America in this week's New York Times Magazine.
