“Anyone who operates in a community has to give back to that community.”
Ottawa Senators owner and potential Maple Leaf Gardens saviour Eugene Melnyk offers words of guidance to the greedy operators of the Maple Leafs, MLSE, who want to gut the rink and replace it with a supermarket.
Foolish ferry foibles
Dennis Mills's ludicrous Save Our Waterfront signs (aren't you the incumbent?) are fouling Riverdale like green garbage bags ripped apart by raccoons, but the absurd Port Authority he helped create continues to trash the harbour. Mills's hand-picked halfwits have failed to create even a temporary terminal for the soon-to-sail Rochester-Toronto ferry. While poor li'l Rochester poured millions into a spiffy terminal, Mills's pals characteristically dithered, trying to squeeze more dough out of the cash-strapped city. And now they're making noise about the island bridge again! Let's dump the Authority, pocket their budget and really save the waterfront.
I'm special, so special
You know a world-class ass-kiss is coming when the Star's story on the Bye-Bye To Bowtie Boy Bash for usurped publisher John Honderich begins, "It was simply the best." The man himself then reminds us he's not real, well, good with language. "Wow. What do you say about all this? What a night, the spirit. The words." He wraps with comments that would make Sally Field blush: "Tonight has quite literally taken my breath away to know how much I have meant to you."
Rosario's right, kids not props
NDPer Rosario Marchese shouldn't have freaked when barred from a Dalton McGuinty propaganda event in a Toronto school. But he's right to be enraged at Liberals like the premier and PM Paul Martin using kids as props to push their politics. If these two-faced Grits really cared about students, they'd cut post-secondary tuition fees.
Cop's kids had no chance
Those poor McCormack kids. Can we really blame Mike and Bill McCormack if allegations against these T.O. cops prove true? The discredited reign of their father, Chief William McCormack, was punctuated by bullying and honesty issues. Like a tinpot dictator, he pinned medals on his chest to which he was not entitled, he brought bogus charges against NOW's editors after critical coverage (the charges were dropped), and he lied in his autobiography, claiming NOW was funded by the NDP. (Hey, Layton, where's our cheque?) So cut the McCormack kids a little slack.
