“Talk about an abdication of leadership. What kind of commitment has [Paul Martin] got to human rights?”
NDP leader Jack Layton on Mr. Dithers's continued diddling on same-sex marriage legislation. What a disgrace. NDP leader Jack Layton on Mr. Dithers's continued diddling on same-sex marriage legislation. What a disgrace.
Nearly Live 8
Burton Cummings? Bryan Adams? Live 8, Sir Bob Geldof's worldwide concert benefit to save the world, needs a little more juice if it's going to attract the young minds and leaders of tomorrow the promoters should be targeting. The Canuck lineup is decidedly past its prime. Only one or two of the dozen acts announced have had a hit any time in the last, what?, 10 years. The combined age of the acts is something like 500-plus - which with this kind of thinking is about how long it'll take to inspire our youth to tackle poverty in Africa.
Dalton's big choke
Dalton McGuinty proved once again this week why he's a complete forehead, choking on a call from noted environmentalist David Suzuki for the province to ban pollution-causing SUVs on smog days - at an anti-smog summit no less. Dalton couldn't even bring himself to ditch the effin' Suburban he gets chauffeured around in, which he's been known to dispatch from T.O. to the airport in Ottawa to meet him when he flies home. Yup, he's a wiener.
Putting its money where its mouth isn't, city council has bent to the complaints of councillors from the styx and passed on ponying up a measly $12,000 for car-free Sundays in Kensington Market - even while the city studies a larger proposal to establish pedestrian-only areas throughout the city. Guess we can kiss those plans goodbye, too. Is it too much to ask that taxpayer dollars going to preferential garbage and snow clearing services for those in the burbs be used to cover the Kensington shortfall?
Ben Kerr's last stand
Busker extraordinaire and perennial mayoral hopeful Ben Kerr has left us for that great big gig in the sky. A musical fixture at Bloor and Yonge for many years, Ben passed away Friday after what a fellow tenant describes as a brief illness. We're told he went out fighting. Ben, his friend says, would want us to remember two things: that we're all ageless, and that when you get angry you hurt yourself more than the person you're angry at. Strum in peace, friend.
