“The debate over whether to legalize marijuana has left an entire generation confused over whether or not pot is legal in Canada. Ladies and gentlemen, it is not.”
Health Minister Tony Clement spreading more reefer madness. The July decision by Toronto Judge Howard Borenstein calling federal policy unconstitutional effectively shot down pot possession laws.
Call it the mystery of the disappearing ? and then reappearing ? bollards. According to Councillor Gord Perks?s constituency assistant Meri Newton, the posts outside the Boulevard Club along the Martin Goodman Trail are not newly erected, at least not officially. They?re replacements for bollards that somehow ?went missing? and were never reinstalled ? until recently, that is, and presumably for cyclists? own safety. Newton says they?re meant to slow down cyclists who?ve been exceeding the 20 km/h speed limit on the trail (What? Where?s the sign?) and creating ?a very dangerous situation? for other trail users. Doesn?t explain why bollards haven?t been erected at other points where Martin Goodman crosses driveways. We suspect the old boys in the Benzes at the posh Boulevard Club had a little something to do with this theft of public rec space.
Puff goes eco award
Another Liberal eco gaffe for the ages. This time it?s Enviro Minister Laurel Broten?s award to Sherway Gardens for banning smoking in the mall parking lot. Follow the smoke trails and it turns out Sherway is owned by Cadillac Fairview, which is owned by the Ontario Teachers? Pension Plan, which is heavily invested in Altria Group, the parent company of Philip Morris. Eco-conscious Etobicoke voters should have a fun time puffing on that one come election time.
Tories after a little weird self-help
We thought John Tory?s Tories were a little more down to earth than the Harris crew that made a mess of the province when they were in power, but we?re not so sure after the party?s youth wing invited controversial self-help group Landmark Education to do a presentation at a Conservative leadership conference recently. Landmark is no cult: that?s what its website says. But the EST-inspired org has some pretty freaky ideas about what makes people tick.
If wishes were horses
Just when you thought the green political posturing couldn?t get any paler, a draft of next month?s APEC leaders? declaration on the environment gets leaked. The doc reveals that PM Stephen Harper is poised to throw his weight behind a global green plan that pushes ?aspirational? targets instead of solid caps on greenhouse gas emissions. What is this, Chicken Soup For The Climate-Changer?s Soul?
