“It distresses me tremendously that during my watch there may have been people wrongly convicted.”
Former chief coroner James Young apologizes ? sort of ? for overlooking the sins of former underling Charles Smith. Too late, Jim.
Norval Morrisseau 1932-2007
He took our breath away ? his vibrant X-ray images lifting us into another dimension. He was, after all, the Copper Thunderbird. Ojibway artist Norval Morrisseau?s mesmerizing canvases depicting the interconnectedness of living beings filled our heads with dreams and gave non-native Canada its entree to Aboriginal earth spirits. He also opened the door for a whole generation of First Nations artists painting a path back to the ancient legends. Fly, Thunderbird, fly.
EI buys big biz welfare
Leave it to the money-grubbers at the Canadian Taxpayers Federation to put their Darwinian spin on news last week that the feds? Employment Insurance fund is a fat $54 billion in the black. Proves we?re paying too much in EI benefits, reasons the CTF. But just where is the cash for all those corporate tax cuts coming from anyway? You guessed it ? the EI surplus, which ends up in general government revenues. Talk about corporate welfare. Meanwhile, unemployed workers screwed over by Kafkaesque eligibility guidelines are left hanging. And a third of all children in the country?s richest city go to bed hungry. Effing disgrace.
Dion makes dubious poverty pitch
Stephane Dion is spoiling for an election fight ? and stealing parts of the NDP platform?s focus on poverty issues and seniors in his bid to take back Parliament for the Libs. But if the foundering Grit head case were really smart, he?d be trying to forge a coalition with the NDP to defeat the big bad Tories, not calling a vote for Layton?s crew a waste. Strategic voting is what got us in this mess in the first place.
Rob Ford: fish or foul?
Councillor Rob Ford has had his 15 minutes. Time for media outlets stoking his campaign against councillors? office budgets to stop the madness. An authoritative source? This is the same poop-for-brains who thinks we should stop watering the plants at City Hall so we can save a few bucks. Fordo, he don?t do the vision thing. Yeah, so pols spend a good chunk of their 50G stipend on mailers. And voters squeal about accountability. We?re more suspicious about those like Ford who are barely making a dent in their office budget. They?re usually the ones doing zip.
