Veggie beefs

Rating: NNNNN

take ketchup with your fries? What about beef tallow? A member of the Seattle Hindu community is leading a class-action lawsuit on behalf of several million Hindu and non-Hindu vegetarians in both Canada and the U.S. against McDonald’s for processing their french fries in animal fat.

“They were openly campaigning in the media that they now cook their fries in vegetable oil,” Harish Bharti tells NOW. “They were openly deceiving their customers, and that’s against the law.” McDonald’s was not prepared to comment on the suit at press time.

In related news, vigilant vegetarians may be the victims of a misprint. At Harvey’s Yonge and College location, graffiti reading “Contains Meat” has been written over an ad for the veggie burger. The official list of ingredients for the burger has a box in which “animal fat/oils” is ticked off. But Frank Hennesey of Cara Operations (Harvey’s owner) insists the check-off only indicates the use of canola oil, not animal fat, in the product.

But don’t relax yet — the veg burger bun may contain milk and eggs.
