Toronto Police Service (TPS) say they are actively reviewing an arrest that resulted in a suspect and officer being run over by a police vehicle.
The incident was captured on video and has since made its way around social media sparking backlash.
Video of the incident shows several officers attempting to arrest a female suspect in the Jane Park Plaza parking lot on Saturday. After getting the suspect on the ground, a police cruiser then rolls into the suspect and officers.
An officer quickly runs into the driver seat, but instead of reversing, the car quickly drives further into the suspect and officers creating an even more chaotic scene.
The suspect can then be heard screaming while another officer instructs the driver to “back up.” After the vehicle proceeds to reverse, the officers pull the suspect from underneath and continue to arrest her, while another officer limps away.
NO SERIOUS INJURIES, ACCORDING TO POLICE
In a statement to Now Toronto, TPS says it is aware of the video circulating online.
“As officers moved to take the suspect into custody, another officer arrived on scene to assist. During this response, the officer’s vehicle inadvertently rolled forward into both the suspect and one of the arresting officers,” the statement said.
TPS says paramedics attended the scene, and neither sustained serious injuries from the vehicle contact and were medically cleared.
“We are actively reviewing the circumstances and are grateful there were no serious injuries during this dynamic incident,” the statement said.
Police were initially called to the area after receiving reports of a female with a knife in the plaza parking lot. According to TPS, the female slashed the tires of three police vehicles.
During the arrest, police say a conducted energy weapon (CEW) was deployed, the suspect was transported to hospital for further assessment related to the deployment, as per protocol, according to police.
