Wii impressions + PS3 Notes

Pre-launch shennanigans

Last Tuesday saw folks gather for the Wii preview – both press and public, albeit at two different times. After an intro, including some commercials (see the video) we got to hit the floor. I have some shots of the event. Didn’t spend too much time with the games there, as everyone wanted a try and we couldn’t spend too much time with it. Zelda was awesome though.

Now, after hitting the PlayStation 3 event on Thursday, (Wycleff had a good performance), I know the graphics can’t compare… but I had less fun and excitement playing games. I took some photos at the event, but both Rick and I found it a rather lacklustre showing. However, the event was nice, more exciting than Nintendo’s. Wycleff played, but I missed most of his set, as I left and returned, as I didn’t want to hang around for 6+ hours.

PS3 Launch

Uh. I won’t talk much about this, save that I wish I had been there to see this live.

Wii Launch

On my way to a club last night, I passed by the camp at the game store where I have my preorder. On my return home, I bought the Wii campers some hot chocolate, as I felt bad for them. They seemed in good spirits and I asked how many extra Wii’s were available. There were 10, and six people already there. It was 1:30 am. Four more lucky people would have a chance still.

I picked up my Wii this morning at 8am. My EB Games handled the preorders nicely, as well as allowing the poor campers to get in to the outer foyer bit. My cousin visiting from out of the country wanted to snag one, but he was out of luck. All 10 extra systems were spoken for.

Getting the Wii home

Set up was simple, connecting to the internet was a breeze, (exactly like the DS, actually if you have WiFi connection). The blight on the process is the really long download/patch and then we couldn’t hit the online server, (I suspect it’s being hammered right now).

So I’m sitting in front of my TV right now with my family: cousin, sister, 6 year old niece and my dad on the couch. More family is incoming this afternoon, so I’ll see how that goes. The verdict so far? Everyone seems to be having a good time. Easy to use, and fun. Everything Nintendo was hoping for, I think.

I’ve got Zelda: Twilight Princess, Trauma Center: Second Opinion and Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz. My Rayman Raving Rabbids preorder is downtown waiting for me. Wii Sports is a lot of fun too. Expect NOW reviews of them all! If not in print, it’ll make the online for sure.

I heard that there are shortages of Zelda and accessories. Luckily I preordered both. So I snagged an extra Wiimote/nunchuk set.
