Kathleen Wynne, who stands at about 5ft 3in was buried by the swarm of media cameras as she entered the Japanese Canadian Cultural Association building at about 11:00pm last night to accept victory in the riding of Don Valley West. What promised to be a real dogfight between the Lib education minister and the PC leader John Tory turned out to be a cake walk for Wynne. It is a rarity that the leader of a major party loses his or her seat in an election and as I watched Wynne barely make it through the crowd to the podium for her speech I thought back to two weeks earlier when I tried to keep up with her as she literally ran from door to door in a Thorncliffe apartment building trying to get votes. And votes she got-5000 more than Tory. Almost a David and Goliath story—I say almost because hey- she is a very high profile minister. Her victory though is important for a number of obvious reasons but one in particular should make the city and the province proud. Kathleen Wynne is the first out lesbian cabinet minister in Ontario and as she introduced and thanked her partner standing beside her I scan her supporters on stage and the hundreds listening to her speech. There are large numbers here from the East Indian and south Asian communities, many of whom are muslim. Hmmm…haven’t we been told that these folks are all homophobic, patriachal and suspect of our public schools. Wynne had the support of the riding’s muslim community in the 2003 election. Did Tory think that by running in this riding and offering funding for religious schools he could take these voters in this one? Thankfully the plan didn’t work and we are all the better for it.
