Review: PARTYNEXTDOOR at Mod Club

Drake and P. Reign show local love for Mississauga rapper's homecoming

PARTYNEXTDOOR at Virgin Mobile Mod Club, Wednesday, November 12. Rating: NNN

When PARTYNEXTDOOR appeared on the Mod Club stage at 10:30 pm, the crowd gave him a warm welcome home from his North American tour. Shouting lyrics line for line along with him, it was clear that those in attendance had allowed PARTYNEXTDOOR TWO, the artist’s second effort, to serve as the soundtrack for much of their summer and have no intention of allowing it to fade away for fall.

Performing material from this summer’s release as well as his self-titled debut mixtape, PARTYNEXTDOOR wasted little time on small talk and pleasantries. Save for a too-quick Persian Rugs serenade to a fan pulled from the audience onstage — during which the fan started snapping selfies of her big moment — one track rolled straight into another.

The Mississauga native acknowledged that he wished he had more material to perform. His earnestly delivered promise to continue making quality music was endearing and it helped to make up for a shorter than expected set.

Bringing out P. Reign to perform Realest in the City provided an ally to address the crowd on PARTYNEXTDOOR’s behalf and they were eager to show their appreciation. That energy only intensified for Recognize, where of course, Drake, 6 God himself, joined his protégé to close out the show.

Clocking in around 45 minutes, it was hard not to walk out of the venue wanting more. That being said, it’s a credit to PARTYNEXTDOOR’s growing stage presence that the guest appearance from Drake helped to complete the night, rather than eclipsing all that came before it.
