Even at their glammiest and most campy, the Scissor Sisters' recordings don't hold a candle to the spectacle of seeing the band live. So it was only a matter of time before the mischievous elves at Polydor realized the lucrative potential in assembling a glossy DVD package for the legions of at-home fans who need visuals on which to model their snazzy spandex outfits. We Are Scissor Sisters... And So Are You is a nicely put together compilation of video clips, live show footage, goofy hangout sessions and a stylish doc, but the navigational menus, which feature individual Sisters leading you through a sparkly fantasyland, are a total highlight.
The concert film, shot in Brighton, features costumed, fanatic crowds who might even be more over-the-top than the Sisters themselves - it's Mardi Gras meets Paris Is Burning in SpongeBob's undersea paradise. The show itself is raunchy madness, taken to the next level by the contingent of furries (a yeti, an alien with fernlike hair) who join the band for their encore. Julien Temple's documentary suffers from haphazard editing but provides a good primer on the fab five's cabaret/stripper roots. Surprisingly, the five videos here are the worst part, even when you turn on the inane commentary provided by obsessive UK fans with funny accents.
