Buddies in Bad Times

Founded by Sky Gilbert in 1979, Buddies has long developed and presented works by LGBT artists. In recent years, the company's expanded queer mandate is defined both in terms of sexual identity and outside-the-box works that challenge the norm; youth mentorship also figures prominently. Under current artistic director Brendan Healy, Buddies is the world's largest facility-based queer company, staging some of the most exciting alternative works in the Toronto season, including The Silicone Diaries, The Maids and Blasted, all helmed by Healy. Just as important is the networking Buddies does with other indie companies, which has produced such great shows as the current revival of Studio 180's excellent The Normal Heart, a perfect match for the Buddies mandate.
