We may be in the midst of an economic downturn, but that hasn't affected some theatre companies. Attendance at the Next Stage, the Toronto Fringe's January fling, grew 15 per cent over its first year, with over 5,100 tickets sold and more than $36,000 returned to the eight participating indie companies.
Looking ahead to this summer, some 500 companies applied to be picked at the January 27 Fringe lottery. Theatre festival regular T. Berto won the Fringe New Play Contest for A Singularity Of Being, to be staged during the 21st Fringe in July.
