The title of Ryan Maglunob’s Oh… And You Were Good Too alludes to that awkward moment after a comedy show when audience members are leaving, praise the comic they liked, then see another and feel compelled to say something nice to them as well.
It’s a shame a joke about that didn’t make it onto the album. For the first third, it’s pretty laugh-free. There’s even a track called These Jokes Are NOT On The Album, named perhaps because some jokes failed to get their desired response.
The problem is, Maglunob doesn’t establish his comic persona until midway through, when he’s talking about helping out his Filipino-Canadian father (great accent) with his computer. Then his jokes start to land, including one that allows him to vent his frustration as a single man by turning down a stripper. There’s real anger here that results in an honest joke, and a nice tag when he connects it back to his dad material.
The remainder – bits about working out and online dating – could be fresher. This album fails to give me a good sense of what he’s about.
