Cream Of Comedy’s five noms face off

Rating: NNNNN

The Cream Of Comedy Awards have become an annual tradition to see what rising young comic rises to the top. The winner of the 10th annual event (see related story, page 83) gets announced Saturday (November 18). But for a chance to see just how funny the nominees are on paper, we subjected them – Rebecca Addelman, Andrew Johnston, Nathan Fielder, the Black Roses (Hayley Gratto and Chelsea P. Manders) and Desiree Lavoy – to yet another tradition, the annual Cream Of Comedy Q&A.

The Black Roses

How would you describe your humour?

Rebecca Addelman: Sexy, but it leaves every penis in the room flaccid.

The Black Roses: Naughty comedic folk music with a satiric twist.

Nathan Fielder: Unnecessary.

What’s your motto?

Andrew Johnston: “Life’s too short for modesty.

The Black Roses: “Would Celine Dion approve? No? Then let’s do it!

Desiree Lavoy: “Never reveal your motto. (Sorry, it was a pretty stupid motto anyway, definitely not Starbucks coffee cup material.)

Cream Of Comedy’s turning 10. What were you doing at 10?

Johnston: Living vicariously through Sabrina the Teenage Witch, basking in the comforts of life in the closet and secretly lusting after Jonathan Brandis, may he rest in peace.

Lavoy: Sitting around, still living with my parents. I wasn’t in a relationship and didn’t even have a job. It’s not a period I’m really proud of.

How would you spend the prize money?

Lavoy: Some toward my student loan, and obviously lots of candy.

Johnston: Vodka and disposable H&M T-shirts.

Addelman: My mother is really sick right now and needs expensive dialysis treatments…. Fuck that, I’d have sex with the money until it got me pregnant so I could make money babies.
