Call it lucky 13. The 13th annual Moving Pictures fest is one of the strongest yet. The best directors realize you can’t just plunk a camera in front of dancers and call it a film. Here are some of the best (and, yes, worst) of the fest.

A Delicate Battle part of the closing gala at the Royal Cinema (608 College), Sunday (November 7) at 7 pm. $10. Rating: NN

Blame director Mark Adam for sucking all the life out of Matjash Mrozewski ‘s exciting neo-classical piece. Mrozewski’s got great dramatic instincts – he knows what works on a stage. His short ballet, though non-narrative, suggests lots about gender and power, and in a theatre it has an archetypal feel. Adam, who apparently got a digital cam last Christmas, brings it down to earth. He has no sense of how to capture bodies in motion. The work is all about the rustling of gowns and rushing through the hallways of Hart House. At least I think it’s Hart House the thing is so terribly lit, it’s impossible to tell.
