Just as Côté is mixing things up for this program, so is Kate Holden, who's just joined Dancemakers and performs in their season premiere, Things In Between.
Before joining the company, Holden was one of the country's most sought-after independent dancers. A few months ago she shared the stage with Côté in ProArteDanza's fall show. Back in 2004, she premiered an earlier version of Things In Between by Michael Trent, who's now Dancemakers' artistic director.
"The architecture of the piece is the same, and there's still a video element and movable screens," she says.
"But the movement is completely different. Sometimes Michael will resurrect a piece of movement and say, 'Do you remember this?', but it ends up getting cut or becoming something else."
Holden says Trent, in his relatively new role as artistic director, wants to work in a horizontal fashion. Dancers are called "interpreters" and have lots of input.
"He doesn't want the vertical model of the choreographer telling the dancers what to do. So we talk a lot. Discussion is a huge part of the process. He wants a lot of the movement instincts to be generated in the moment."
Holden says she'll continue working on independent works when she can - especially during Dancemakers' spring and summer off-season.
She promises another piece by First Things First, the company she formed earlier this year with dancer Kate Franklin to produce the stunning show Namesake.
But in the meantime, she's enjoying being part of a troupe that's re-envisioning what it's about.
"Right now Michael's got a blank slate," she says. "He can create and make Dancemakers what he wants it to be. It's thrilling for a dancer to be in on the ground floor like this."
