In The Further Soil

Rating: NNNNN

It’s a landmark year for dance artist Menaka Thakkar. This month, after 40 uninterrupted years as a professional dancer (actually, she’s been dancing since the age of four), Thakkar turns 60. But the legendary local guru of East Indian classical dance isn’t putting down her sari. Tomorrow night (Friday, March 8) she’s unveiling the premiere of a major work called In The Further Soil, a symbol-rich look at how the centuries-old Indian dance tradition has taken root “in the further soil” of her adopted country.

The nimble-as-ever sexagenarian fronts a cast of 89 dancers in this affectionate look at making her art in Canada, using Bharatnatyam, Odissi and other styles of dance as well as music and video.
