Subways: 5 Variations On A Theme By Rilke

Subways: 5 Variations On A Theme By Rilke directed by Daniel Conrad, part of Canada Dances, Saturday (October 26), 9 pm. Rating: NNNNN

This 10-minute non-narrative piece set in the gleaming subways of Prague is easily the strongest work in the Canada Dances program.Inspired by a Rilke poem, it looks at humans as trapped creatures exploring the limits of their subterranean surroundings, claiming and demarcating their space.

Crystal Pite’s choreography makes use of every element available — the bars of a subway car, the railings of an escalator — and nicely captures a sense of urban angst, while director Daniel Conrad composes scenes elegantly, with a touch of absurd humour.
