Q&A: Susan Fischer

HOMO NIGHT IN CANADA, June 28, Buddies in Bad Times

Susan Fischer has done Buddies in Bad Times’ annual comedy showcase Homo Night In Canada before, but this year she’s coming out… as herself. Fischer’s best known to audiences for her outrageous alter ego, Evelyn Reese, the cocktail-swilling, lipstick-smeared character who suffers from a serious case of foot-in-mouth disease. Fischer will be in good company in a lineup that includes Shawn Hitchins, Elvira Kurt, Richard Ryder, Dawn Whitwell and hosts the B-Girlz. See listing.

What does WorldPride mean to you?

It’s very exciting and historic. I’m even going to march in the parade this time.

Beginning with the words “In a world…” can you pitch your show/act as a movie trailer?

“In a world where many comedians drop the F-bomb, one grown woman still thinks she’ll be grounded for swearing.”

You’re performing as Susan Fischer and not as Evelyn Reese. How come?

My girlfriend told me to face my fears. Besides, Evelyn is renting her apartment out for the weekend. Ka-ching.

What would Evelyn say about your routine?

“I have way more confidence than that girl.”

What song has the potential to be a Pride anthem?

The Girl From Ipanema. That song is the reason I came out.

Pride weekend must-have accessories?

Bottle of Purell.

Favourite Pride pickup line?

“May I have this dance?”

Favourite line that’s worked on you?

“How do you think the date’s going so far?”

Best queer-related piece of news of 2014?

Kathleen Wynne’s election as premier.

What’s your fantasy green room rider?

Bottle of Purell.

And your actual rider?

A chair to put my stuff on.

If Mayor Rob Ford saw your show, what would he think?

“Lezzie.”

And what would you say to him?

“And you are?”

Message to couples taking part in June 26’s mass gay wedding?

“On the count of three, say: ‘I do!'”
