Fringe Review: Mullet’s Ghost

MULLET’S GHOST STORY by Allan Turner and Ron Fromstein. Harbord House (150 Harbord). July 2-10 at 9:30 pm. Buy tickets. Rating: NNN

If you’re in the mood for a pint, some laughs, a few spooks and even a whiff of undead romance, check out Mullet’s Ghost Story, an amusing site-specific show haunting Harbord House each night at 9:30 pm.

Zombie clown and struggling actor Jean-Paul Mullet (Allan Turner) arrives late for his waitering shift because he was auditioning. Once he arrives he gets chewed out (offstage) by his boss before encountering something even scarier.

Mullet’s design, from his shock of bluish hair to his smeared makeup and faded glory rags, is magnificent, and Turner brings a loveable, chatty vibe to the character. I just wish there were more edge to the show. Apart from a jab at Torontonian coldness, there aren’t many funny lines.

But director Bruce Hunter makes good use of the intimate space, and Mullet’s backstory of being drowned at sea works well with the nautical theme of the venue’s artwork.
