WAITING FOR WAITING FOR GODOT by Micah Champagne, Rolando Argueta and Molly McGregor. Al Green Theatre. July 2 at noon, July 4 at 6:45 pm, July 5 at 3 pm, July 7 at 9:15 pm, July 8 at 2:15 pm, July 10 at 4 pm. Buy tickets. Rating: NNN

Despite the meta title and concept, this comedy about two quarrelsome friends stuck in a theatre lineup is not a deep exploration or adaptation of Godot.

Roommates Cody and Rose exchange heated and sometimes philosophical banter about everyday absurdities as their entry is repeatedly delayed, making the vibe more Seinfeld than Beckett. Their arguments about everything from drugs and addiction to the nature of creativity are often funny, and the duo’s squabbly dynamic ends up clicking.

Less strong are recurring cutaways where their escalating disputes are settled by different kooky arbiters (a professor, a game show host) which are hit-and-miss on humour and could use some polish in delivery.

There are a few clever Godot jokes sprinkled throughout, but the connection to the classic remains largely superficial.
