Based on the abduction by Boko Haram of 276 young women from their school in Nigeria, All Our Yesterdays is a sensitive, moving production, written and directed by Chloé Hung.
The fictionalized narrative deals with two sisters, Ladi (Amanda Weise), a bright student, and Hasana (Chiamaka Umeh), less well socialized, who relies on her intellect and ritual actions for sanity. Prisoners for six months, they recall their past and hope for a future that doesn’t seem tangible.
Played out on a chalkboard circle, the action moves back and forth in time, moments of sharp comedy interrupting intense confrontations. The actors are strong and the direction compelling you’re sure to be shaken by the ending.
A surprise Fringe treasure, All Our Yesterdays has just been chosen as the patrons’ pick for its venue, Factory Studio. That means an added performance Sunday at 9:15 pm, following a first presentation at noon the same day.
