Vanessa Smythe’s captivating solo show is an emotional and spellbinding combination of storytelling, stand-up comedy, poetry and song – all at the same time.

Standing behind a mic, she conjures rich autobiographical narratives about life as a 20-something in Toronto that are both funny and poignant in her unique vocal style of rhyming sing-speak. Describing events like a brief romance with a poet, awkward interactions with customers at her restaurant job, attending her brother’s grade eight graduation, she’s able to quickly tack between the humour in everyday minutia, and grand, heartfelt observations about big life questions.

The result is deeply moving, and at less than an hour our glimpse into her one-of-a-kind world seems all too brief.
