Fringe Warm-up

Rating: NNNNN

The countdown’s underway to the city’s biggest theatre blowout. The Fringe begins next Thursday (July 5). So here’s the thing. You need to get organized.

First, pick up a free program book at Starbucks. Peruse it calmly, circling any shows that catch your interest. Look at critics’ comments, but be careful where they come from. (Remember the Columbia Pictures fake-critic debacle.)

Also keep in mind that if an artist has done the Fringe before, the show will invariably be listed as a “Fringe hit” in the program, even if it wasn’t.

Try to pick a range of shows, mixing established artists and lesser-known types. There’s nothing more satisfying than discovering someone new and then spreading the word to folks in line.

Anything else?

Stock up on water, especially if you’re heading to venues that aren’t air-conditioned. Wear comfy shoes. Read NOW’s Stage section next week. 416-966-1062.
