Good work – too bad about the show

Rating: NNNNN

JENNIFER WARREN

in THE QUEEN’S HOUR Energetic writer/performer Warren – performing her first show to a house of seven – is strong as a singer, but her comic characters aren’t very funny. NN (JK)

SUNDAY MUSE

in BITTY IDIOT’s “DISCOMBOBULATED” Muse as clown Bitty Idiot could use scripted material that evokes more laughs, though she has good audience rapport and a fast sense of improv. NN (JK)

LARYSSA YANCHAK

in SWEETHEART OF THE MOSH PIT We learn more about Tim Hortons coffee than we do about either of the characters, but a miscast Yanchak gets our attention as a sick mother who haunts her metalhead daughter. NN (GS)

ANDREA SHAWCROSS

in ROLLER GIRL Shawcross skates past any real emotional truths in her rambling solo script about a Thunder Bay roller skating queen who’s got some competition. But scenes between the skater and her dictatorial coach earn top marks. NN (GS)

JESSICA SHERMAN

in LOOK BACK IN ANGER This stiffly directed production of John Osborne’s kitchen sink classic – performed here in an actual rooming house kitchen – only comes alive when Sherman’s focused, intelligent Helena enters the room. NN (GS)
