Nursery School Musical

NURSERY SCHOOL MUSICAL by Racheal McCaig, Brett McCaig and Anthony Bastianon (Fence Post). At the Berkeley Street Theatre Upstairs. To October 3. See Continuing. Rating: NNN

More musical revue than story musical, this energetic look at nursery school newbies and their parental units amuses with its satiric insights about contemporary life.

On the first day of school, the kids warble about pooping their pants and breastfeeding, while their parents sing about their freedom to have sex again and why Disney princesses tend to be sluts.

Remounted from Fringe 08 with a new set and slightly different cast, the show still spends too much time on the school’s single Jewish teacher (Kylee Evans), and often pats itself on the back for being so clever.

But in solid, tuneful numbers like the sharply choreographed Mommy Mafia and Nannies For Nothing, the show soars as we roar.

The fine performers do double and triple duty (backstage must be a zoo), with Paul Constable an amiable acting standout and Aaron Walpole impressing with his huge vocal range. The lack of tension or story, however, makes the ending feel abrupt.
