Culture Stage

Picture this in Toronto…

The next time you go to the theatre, keep that camera in your pocket. Consider this clip from a performance of Gypsy, currently on Broadway.

In the middle of her big closing number (at around 0:47 on the clip), star Patti LuPone breaks the fourth wall, tears into a no-doubt-trembling audience member and spits him out, getting a huge ovation.

It’s a Tony Award-winning moment, but not surprising to those who know LuPone’s passion in shows like Evita, Sweeney Todd and TV’s Life Goes On. This ain’t someone you want to cross.

Could this happen in polite ol’ Toronto? Can you imagine The Sound Of Music’s Elicia MacKenzie or her brood of cute Von Trapps chewing out people because of the sound of cellphone music? Would We Will Rock You’s Erica Peck pick on you for opening up some crinkly candy wrapper?

Don’t think so.

Also of note: The Patti LuPone Audience Freakout Remix!
