The Fringe is over for another year, but audiences are lucky that some of its best shows return for another viewing.
Icara, one of the best productions of the 2000 Fringe -- or, for that matter, of the year 2000 -- gets a remount, again in an outdoor venue. Written and directed by Ned Dickens, the piece turns the Icarus legend, the boy who flew so close to the sun that his waxen wings melted, into the tale of a young woman establishing her independence from her father.
Dickens wrote it for his own daughter, Risa Dickens, who plays the title character, with Bruce Beaton as Daedelus, Icara's father.
The pwyc show opens tonight (Thursday, July 19) at the pier on the south side of Centre Island. Call 416-603-1588 for info and 416-392-8193 for the ferry schedule.
As one theatre festival ends, another's just around the corner. Audiences barely have a chance to rest from the Fringe when SummerWorks looms large. You can get a free sample of the shows at a reading series at the Idler Pub (255 Davenport). The Sunday (July 22) slate includes a production chosen from the Ontario Drama Festival and works by Michael Valliant-Saunders and Laurie Fyffe. A week later, July 29, look for pieces by eight other writers, among them Adam Nashman, Caroline Gillis, debbie young (great in the Fringe's Da Kink In My Hair) and Anne Ptasznik. 416-410-1048.
