It's a bull's-eye year for several Ontario artists, winners of the seventh annual K.M. Hunter Artists Awards.Especially noteworthy are the recipients in theatre and dance, Ross Manson (Volcano) and Yvonne Ng (Princess Productions), since they've pushed their art forms in challenging, unexpected and multidisciplinary directions. Each receives a prize of $8,000.
The Dora Awards may be higher-profile, but the Harolds are the coveted awards in the alternative theatre community. Named after Harold Kandel, a theatre aficionado as well-known for his hurrahs as for his verbal tomatoes, the awards (this is the eighth annual presentation) are given to 13 lovers and makers of theatre by last year's recipients. They'll each receive a piece of sculpture by actor/writer/director Gil Garratt. With hosting by dynamite comics Shoshana Sperling and Teresa Pavlinek and music spun by DJ Lazy Boy, the evening looks very promising. Monday (May 13) at the 360 (326 Queen West).
