all the right serves
The joint was jumping at the Stem Diner last weekend with Box2, a performance and meal served up by Vancouver's Radix Theatre. As tyrannical cook (Andrew Laurenson), cheery server (Kendra Fanconi) and rebellious busboy (Paul Ternes) played out their outer roles and revealed their inner thoughts, fantasies popped up like magic mushrooms -- dances down the aisle, water ballet behind the counter, even a film projected onto the venetian blinds that took us out to a BC forest. The action sometimes went out onto the street, and a flower seller turned up impromptu to hawk blossoms to diners, including members of DNA Theatre. Fine performances highlighted this clever, emotion-driven show about intimacy and the walls we build in our lives. The burger and blueberry pie weren't bad either.
