Picton picks

Holidaying in eastern Ontario? You can catch an outpost of Theatre Passe Muraille and lots of Toronto stage artists at Picton’s Regent Theatre , the newest of Ontario’s summer theatres. The season’s already under way, with productions of Hank Williams: Return To Innocence , by and featuring J. D. Nicholsen , and a remount of Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman ‘s and Emily Sugerman ‘s moving The End Of Pretending , with Clinton Walker assisting in them in direction.

Opening this week is Kevin Quain ‘s musical Tequila Vampire Matinee , directed by Steve Lucas and featuring Quain, Brendan Wall , Jim Jones , Eliza-Jane Scott , Aviva Chernik and Nicholsen. Think of it as an out-of-town tryout, since the show, an irreverent retelling of the jealousy-driven Pagliacci story, opens the Passe Muraille season in November.

Also playing are remounts of a pair of SummerWorks hits, A. Shay Hahn ‘s Girls And Horses , directed by Jacoba Knaapen with Scott, Jones and Aviva Armour-Ostroff (opens August 19), and another Passe Muraille show skedded for next year, Sean Reycraft ‘s One Good Marriage , with Mary Francis Moore and Wall, directed by Shari Hollett (August 21).
