The adventurous Theatrefront has been crossing borders in more ways than one. Last February, five company members went to Sarajevo to collaborate with Bosnian theatre artists on the collectively created Sarajevo Project , a piece in progress mounted a month later at the Sarajevo International Winter Festival. Another workshop, this time in Toronto, played out over the last two weeks, with visiting Bosnian actors Sanela Babic , Alena Dzebo and Emir Zec joining Theatrefront's Holly Lewis , Christopher Morris and director Daryl Cloran . The tale of a Bosnian who fled to Canada in 1993 and returns home with a Canadian girlfriend who's unaware of his past has strong performances, some gripping moments and clever ways of handling its dual languages. The T.O. workshop was presented in co-pro with the Tarragon . Hope it'll be part of the Tarragon season next year.
Caught one of the five sold-out performances of Variété last weekend, the vaudeville piece with music by Mauricio Kagel presented by Volcano , BMH Shift and Art of Time Ensemble . The show, with Nigel Shawn Williams as a sinister, scatological MC, rolled out an ever-surprising series of sexy acts, including an animatronic pig; a lesbian-tinged aerial piece performed by underwear-clad Stacy Clark Baisley and Heather Hammond ; a series of rag doll moments by contortionist Jinny Jessica Jacinto ; a fantasy burlesque choreographed by Julia Sasso in which two Amazonian models ( Evadne Fulton and Stephanie Thompson ) towered over delighted photographer E.J. Bellocq ( Rick Howland ); and a very funny and poignant piece by Rebecca Hope Terry involving eggshells. Vive la Variété. firstname.lastname@example.org email@example.com
