Dora Monday

This is the 25th anniversary of the Dora Mavor Moore Awards , our theatre and dance community’s annual recognition and celebration of excellence in the performing arts. The awards are June 28 at the Princess of Wales – call 416-536-6468, ext 27, for tickets – but first there’s another annual tradition, Dora Monday (June 21). Featuring excerpts from works nominated for best new play, the evening is a chance to see how the writers interpret their own work, for the writer is usually also the performer. This year’s nominees include Eric Woolfe , Beatriz Pizano , bluemouth inc. , Soheil Parsa ‘s adaptation of Abas Na’lbandian , Darrell Dennis , Marjorie Chan , Michael Hollingsworth , Trey Anthony , Michael O’Brien and Peter Froehlich .

Ross Manson hosts the free reading in the NOW Lounge .

Drama queens

With Pride Week approaching, it’s time to air out those rainbow duds. Among the many events – check out NOW’s coverage this week and next – are a number of theatre-related presentations. Among the upcoming shows is the latest edition of Cheap Queers , three nights of cabaret presentations beginning Wednesday (June 23). That night, hosted by Patrick Conner , includes performances by Dmitry Chepovetsky , David Bateman , Savoy Howe , the Jane Waynes and William Lau . The two following evenings are hosted by Keith Cole and Kirsten Johnson . See listings, page 82, for details. Of course, Buddies in Bad Times gets into the theatrical action. Look for the lesbian cabaret series Strange Sisters Friday (June 18) and Attack Of The Killer Bs (with the B-Girlz and others) Friday and Saturday (June 18 to 19) as well as a mini-show called 40 Tiny Queer Performances Tuesday (June 22). On Sunday (June 20) there’s a doubleheader of theatre – a reading of Harry Rintoul ‘s Brave Hearts , directed by Chris Dupuis , in the afternoon, and The Anthology Project at night. The latter’s a fascinating show in which writers Sky Gilbert , Sonja Mills , Shoshana Sperling and David Tomlinson reflect on the 25-year-old company and its meaning.
