Dark Tunnel

The 20-year-old Platform 9 continues its dramatically incisive work with Tunnel , which had an all-too-brief run last week. Wendy White ‘s great perspective set, a foreboding, dungeonlike basement, was impressive even before actors Hume Baugh and Patrick Conner set foot on it. Baugh played Gil, a man intending to show the world his mettle by blowing himself up during a televised leadership debate. The chameleon-like Conner took on all the other parts, including Gil’s relatives, estranged wife and various party leaders.

The play unfolds as parallel debates, between the politicians and between Gil and parts of his psyche. Playwright Robin Fulford ‘s language games and clever repartee rev up the theatrical tension while we learn about the guilt that’s driven the dynamite-strapped Gil to his suicide attempt.

Don’t block this Tunnel, please. Bring it back for a longer run.
