Lots of actors would like to play roles for which they'll never be cast. Performer Marsha Mason 's one of them, and she's redressing the problem, at least for one night, at the CanStage Rehearsal Hall. Called Miscast Me! , the show, organized by Mason, offers a number of performers in roles you'd not otherwise see them in onstage.
The evening is a benefit for the Actors' Fund of Canada , a vital part of the professional theatre community that organizes short-term financial aid for those in need.
Any young child with a sense of adventure will love The Man Whose Mother Was A Pirate , Paula Wing 's adaptation of Margaret Mahy 's kids' book. Who wouldn't adore a mother who practises her cutlass work rather than clean the house, and has a romantic yearning to return to the sea? The production at the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People has an energetic cast: Deann deGruijter as the pipe-smoking mother and Gregory Prest as her numbers-fixated son, who learns to loosen up and smell the salt air rather than the dustiness of his office files. Richard Binsley plays all the other figures, including a harried boss, a land-loving farmer and a Captain Hookish ship's commander.
The colourful design -- Michael Gianfrancesco 's surreal sets and props, lighting by Heidi McDonald and costumes by Mary Fulford-Winsor -- is equally intriguing. Our fave costume turns the boss into a walking blackboard covered with chalky numbers. Cathy Nosaty 's songs range from light ballads to full-out vaudeville turns.
It's the kind of fast-paced entertainment where the four-to-seven-year-old audience never loses interest in the vivid characters or the galloping storyline.

Are you a non-Equity director who wants a chance to helm a full-length, well-known play and work with an established company? Alumnae Theatre is seeking directors for its 2006-2007 season, which includes Christopher Durang 's Baby With The Bathwater , Judith Thompson 's Perfect Pie , Oscar Wilde 's Lady Windermere's Fan and Joanna McClelland Glass 's If We Are Women . Speaking of Perfect Pie , Judith Thompson 's works have had a number of productions in the UK, most recently at last summer's Edinburgh Fringe. Now Perfect Pie is set to tour Scotland in a production by Edinburgh company Stellar Quines , a troupe devoted to the work of female theatre artists. Running from March through the end of April, the show's directed by the impressive actor Maureen Beattie , who was a hit here in 2002 when she played the title role in Medea , adapted by Liz Lochhead .
