Dora Mavor Moore Awards for theatre and dance recognized Toronto's cultural diversity in a major fashion. We don't think Asian and black artists have ever received as many nominations in a single year, and the 27th annual awards last Monday (June 26) acknowledged their talent. In the general category, d'bi.young 's blood.claat -- one woman story , presented by Theatre Passe Muraille and Obsidian , picked up prizes for outstanding new play and young's performance. Director Nigel Shawn Williams got the nod for his work on the Obsidian production of The Monument .
In the independent division, Bombay Black , produced by Cahoots Theatre Projects in association with Nightswimming , received awards for new play ( Anosh Irani ), set and costume design ( Camellia Koo ) and sound design ( Suba Sankaran ).
Best line of the night went to Irani, who shared with us his discovery that he couldn't look to his mother for advice on his stage career. After reading the first draft of his play, she asked if it had an intermission.
Big winner in the general division was The Lord Of The Rings , which took home seven awards, including new musical, production, direction and performer Michael Therriault .
Birdland Theatre 's The Last Days Of Judas Iscariot carried off five awards in the indie division: for production, director David Ferry , lighting (Ferry and Glenn Davidson ), and performers Irene Poole and Diego Matamoros .
Dance awards went to Peter Chin for new choreography and Susanna Hood for performance. The Canadian Opera Company took both opera awards, for June Anderson 's performance in Norma and the production of Götterdmmerung , while Roseneath Theatre 's Wrecked scooped the pair of theatre-for-young-audiences awards, for production and Helen Taylor 's performance.
Director Jennifer Tarver took home the Pauline McGibbon Award , while director/writer ahdri zhina mandiela got the Silver Ticket Award .
The first Audience Choice Award , sponsored by NOW , went to the boy band parody BoyGroove .
