>>> SummerWorks review: Sara Does A Solo

SARA DOES A SOLO by Sara Porter. Scotiabank Studio Theatre. Aug 8 at 9 pm, Aug 14 at 5 pm. See listing. Rating: NNNN

Sara Does A Solo highlights Toronto dance artist and writer Sara Porter’s love of wordplay against a series of dances that capture small truths about life: uncertainty, getting trapped in a song, circularity and repetition, how to improvise.

Though casually delivered, the show is carefully crafted, with many lovely details in the text, costuming and score. The ethereal vocal interpretations of Mary Margaret O’Hara (whose songs inspired the show) create a tonal through-line, alternating with Porter’s own take on nostalgic show tune snippets.

The vignettes unfurl simply, one whimsical idea leading to the next in an unforced daisy chain of imagery, music and movement.
